ARISTES — A head-on collision killed two people – a Hegins woman and a Ringtown man – early Sunday morning on Route 42 in Columbia County.
The accident occurred shortly after midnight on a hill between Aristes and an entrance to the Roaring Creek tract of the Weiser State Forest, authorities said.
State police at Bloomsburg said Bryan Foley, 43, of 5 Krebs Road, Ringtown, was driving a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix north on Route 42 when, for some reason, the vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and collided head on with a 2003 Chrysler Sebring driven by Gertrude M. Troup, 58, of 96 Cave Road, Hegins.
Both Foley and Troup were pronounced dead at the scene by Columbia County Deputy Coroner Ron Taylor.
After violent collision, the Grand Prix came to a rest on the shoulder of the southbound lane, police said. The Sebring continued down the hill and stopped in the northbound lane. The driver’s side was completely smashed and its front tire lay flat against the road. A headlight lay several yards away from the vehicle.
Route 42 was closed for several hours after the accident. A blue tarp covered the Grand Prix as troopers investigated.
Locust Township police, fire police, EMS from Mount Carmel and Elysburg and firefighters from Numidia, Aristes and Centralia responded.
Sunday’s accident was the second fatal crash on that stretch of Route 42 in less than four months. On Nov. 12, Donnamarie Curreli, Shenandoah, was killed in a one-vehicle accident less than one mile south of Sunday’s crash.
Curreli was a passenger in a Chevrolet Lumina when it left the road and crashed into several trees. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Christoper Phillips, survived.
