Vikings stomp Upper Dauphin

TOWER CITY - Dennis Jansen and Jarred Matter combined to drive in five runs as the Vikings used a 10-hit attack to defeat the Trojans in a March 30 non-league game.

Jansen was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run single in the second inning that helped Williams Valley jump out to a 5-0 lead.

Matter drove in three runs on two hits, which included a two-run double in the fifth inning.

Kane Bouchard had two of Upper Dauphin's three hits.

Cards capture Classic

PINE GROVE - Pine Grove used some "small ball" to win its Cardinal Classic for the second straight year Saturday, March 30.

Jed Blankenhorn tied the game as part of a double steal and Jared McCabe's bunt single plated the winning run as the Cardinals edged Nanticoke 4-3 in the championship game of the 13th annual tournament.

Pine Grove won the title for the eighth time.

The Cards (3-1) advanced to the final with a 10-3 win over Lake-Lehman in the opening round. Steve Zimmerman was 4-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBIs for the Cardinals, putting Pine Grove ahead for good with a two-run homer in the fifth.

Kobe D'Agostino and Brett Kreiser each had two hits for Pine Grove, with Kreiser's two-run single keying a six-run, sixth-inning outburst. Nevin White tossed three innings of shutout relief to get the win.

In the championship game, Nanticoke took a 3-2 lead in the third inning before Pine Grove rallied.

The Cards tied the game in the bottom of the third when Blankenhorn scored as part of a double steal. Blankenhorn then scored the winning run in the fifth inning when McCabe delivered a two-out bunt single.

Blankenhorn was the star of the championship game, collecting three hits and pitching four innings of scoreless relief to get the victory. The junior scattered two hits and fanned five in his four innings of work.

Greenwood 1

MILLERSTOWN - Austin Snyder and Kellan Masser combined on a five-inning no-hitter as the Eagles opened the season with a Tri-Valley League win over the Wildcats.

Cory Warford hit a pair of doubles and drove in four runs, and Kyle Mace had two hits and drove in three runs. Masser also had two hits, scoring two runs and driving in one.

Halifax 8

TOWER CITY - Williams Valley got by Halifax in seven innings, downing the Wildcats 9-8 on March 28.

Dennis Jansen went 3-4 for 2 RBIs, Ronnie Daub went 2-4 with an RBI and Ben Rautzahn was 1 of 2 for the Vikings.

Owen Daniel, Eric Nelson and Travis Crider pitched for Williams Valley, while Zack Shumber and Hunter Hilinski were on the mound for the Wildcats.

Pine Grove 15

Riverside 0

PINE GROVE - Nevin White and Jared McCabe combined on a two-hit shutout as Pine Grove routed Riverside 15-0 in four innings for a non-league victory on March 27.

Stevie Zimmerman powered the Cardinals' offense, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs.

Brett Kreiser went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, while Logan Levan was 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBIs for Pine Grove.

Millersburg 5

MILLERSBURG - Williams Valley's Brendan Miller and Owen Daniel served on the mound, leading the Vikes to a 12-5 win over Millersburg on March 23. The Vikings kept the Indians to just three hits. Dennis Jansen and Trevor Whelski both went 3 for 4 on the day.
