Vikes lose coach

TOWER CITY - The Williams Valley community is mourning the loss of a long-serving Vikings' coach and teacher.

Gerald P. Stauffenberg, 74, of Tower City died Sunday, September 30 at Holy Spirit Hospital.

Stauffenberg recorded 99 career wins as the Vikings' head football coach and 92 career wins as an assistant coach. He served 18 years as head coach and 14 years as an assistant, his last being the 2011-2012 school year. He was inducted into the Schuylkill County Football Coaches' Association Hall of Fame and the Jerry Wolman Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. In honor of Coach Stauffenberg's dedication to the school district, the school board recently approved naming the athletic field "Stauffenberg Field" at Viking Stadium.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 5 at 11 a.m. from the Trinity United Church of Christ with Rev. Edward Gobrecht. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Orwin. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6-8 p.m. from the Chapel of the Dimon Funeral Homes, Inc., Tower City and from 10-11 a.m. Friday from the church.
