Tri-Valley wins Athens tourney

ATHENS - Tri-Valley doesn't have a lot of wrestlers, but the ones they have can do plenty of damage in a tournament bracket.

Entering just 10 men, the Dawgs captured the team title Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Jarvis Memorial Tournament in Athens.

In climbing to the top, Tri-Valley crowned two champions and had six runners-up. Wyoming Valley West placed second and Saegertown took third in the eight-team event.

At 160, Ty Schoffstall (9-0) won a gold with a 5-0 record. He was voted the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler.

At 152, Blake Bowman (9-1) also went 5-0 to earn an individual gold medal. Along the way, Bowman defeated a New York state fourth-place finisher.

Placing second for Tri-Valley were Caleb Bordner (7-2) at 120, Chase Schaeffer at 138, Hunter Harner at 145, Anthony Snyder at 170, Lyle Troutman (7-2) at 195 and Mason White at 220.

Bordner's loss came in overtime to Saegertown's Tyler Vath, who finished fifth at states at 106 last season. Bordner took eighth in the same bracket in March.

Pine Grove goes 2-2 at Weiser Duals

ROBESONIA - Jared McCabe (7-1), Ryan Heim (6-1), Eli Brill (6-1), Guy Zimmerman (7-2) and Ryan Martin (7-1) posted 4-0 records for the day at the Conrad Weiser Duals.

The Cardinals (2-2) defeated Conrad Weiser 40-31 and Tulpehocken 60-6 but lost to Reading 41-39 and Milton Hershey 42-31.

Danny Diaz-Walton (6-1) had a 3-1 day for Pine Grove.

Upper Dauphin posts 3-2 mark at duals

ELIZABETHVILLE - Trey Campbell (9-2) enjoyed a 5-0 day in his home gym at the Upper Dauphin Duals.

The Trojans (6-5) topped Shikellamy 42-39, Columbia 46-36 and Twin Valley 42-36 but fell to Schuylkill Valley 60-15 and to Manheim Township 58-24.

Connor Boyer and Cody Snyder had 4-1 records at the event for Upper Dauphin.

Haven, Halifax, Vikes compete at Mustang Duals

MIDDLEBURG - Todd Zimmerman (4-0) and Nate Kramer 7-1) had perfect 3-0 days for Schuylkill Haven at Midd-West's Mustang Duals.

The Hurricanes (1-3) lost 55-18 to Northern Lebanon and 54-24 to Harrisburg but defeated Elk Lake 48-6.

Dalton Werley, Shay Mattern, Jack Hower and Shane Savitsky went 2-1 for Schuylkill Haven.

Halifax went 2-1, defeating Harrisburg 38-34 and Midd-West 41-36 but dropping a 44-33 decision to Northern Lebanon.

Eric McBurney (6-0) at 106, Robbie Moretz (6-0) at 160 and Joey Kaufman (6-0) at 285 had perfect 3-0 days for the Wildcats (4-2). Moretz (101-23) notched his 100th career win with a forfeit against Northern Lebanon.

Williams Valley lost to Harrisburg 42-36 and to Montgomery 45-31. Alex Raho, Matthew Miller, Billy Schaeffer and Ronnie Daub won two matches apiece for the Vikings.

MIFFLINTOWN - Despite winning eight of 11 contested bouts, Line Mountain gave up 18 forfeit points in losing to the Indians.

Brendan Renn (195) and Cory Warford (285) had pins for the Eagles.

NEWPORT - Coy Campbell (113), Devon Hoffman (132), David Miller (152), Alex Wray (160), Cody Zerby (182) and Trey Campbell (195) posted falls to lead Upper Dauphin to a Tri-Valley Leauge win over Newport.

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - Big wins by Tanner Dean and Shane McGrath lifted the Spartans to a non-league victory over the Vikings.

Dean used a third-period takedown to edge regional qualifier J.R. Rummel 7-5 at 220, and McGrath's 10-0 major decision over Alex Raho in the next-to-last bout at 120 clinched the dual meet.

Williams Valley jumped out to a 15-0 lead, but the Spartans got falls from Jordan Shinkus, Auston Hummel, Garet Grove, C.J. Stenhilber and Nathan Gadinski to rally.

Billy Schaeffer (138) and Noah Crisswell (195) notched pins for the Vikes.
