Schuylkill League athletic directors spent part of last week dealing with the persistent rain that forced them to scramble to find make-up dates for baseball, softball and track events.

They also spent some time dealing with the future, setting the dates, sites and times for the upcoming Schuylkill League playoffs.

The Schuylkill League Track and Field Championships were to begin the postseason party, with the event set for Wednesday, May 7, at Tamaqua Area High School. Field events will start at 3 p.m., with track events getting under way at 4 p.m.

The rain date is Thursday, May 8.

Meanwhile, Schuylkill League baseball and softball teams will spend the next few days trying to complete their regular seasons.

The baseball and softball playoffs will be held the week of May 11-17. In addition to Schuylkill League gold, league champions receive preferential seeding for the District 11 Tournament, which begins later this month.

In baseball, all games will be played at Pine Grove's Stump Stadium. The two division champions and the two runners-up qualify.

The semifinals are scheduled for Monday, May 12, with games times of 4:30 and 7 p.m.

The championship game will be played Tuesday, May 13, at 7 p.m.

In last year's final, Tamaqua nipped North Schuylkill 2-1.

In softball, all games will be played at Blue Mountain's Patton Field. The three division champions and the Division I wild card qualify.

The semifinals are set for Wednesday, May 14, with games times of 4:30 and 7 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for Thursday, May 15, at 7 p.m.

In last year's final, Tri-Valley edged Pine Grove 3-2.

The entire spring has been a challenge for athletic directors and teams alike as first cold and snow and then rain forced postponements more often than not.

It's led to some creative scheduling, with doubleheaders becoming common.
