Local players honored by PFN

Ten area high school football players were honored Tuesday, Jan. 1 by being named to The Pennsylvania Football News' All-State teams.

Leading the way for the local selections was Tri-Valley senior running back Blake Bowman, who was named to the Class A first-team offense. Bowman, The Republican-Herald Co-Player of the Year, rushed for an area-best 2,198 yards on 274 carries and scored 34 touchdowns for the District 11 Class A runner-up Dawgs.

Williams Valley seniors Jake Mika and Owen Daniel and Minersville senior Brett Polinsky were named to the Class A second team. Mika, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior, was selected at offensive line, while Daniel was named the Defensive Athlete and Polinsky was picked at defensive line.

Four area players were named to the Class A third-team defense: Mahanoy Area junior defensive lineman Tyler Cavenas, Tri-Valley junior defensive lineman Devin Masser, Williams Valley senior defensive lineman J.R. Rummel and Williams Valley junior linebacker Trevor Whelski.

In Class AA, Mount Carmel senior Rob Varano was named to the first-team defense at punter, while senior Eric Joraskie was selected as a second-team defensive lineman.
