Several local wrestlers earned championship titles and medals during holiday tournaments, including grapplers from Williams Valley, Tri-Valley, Upper Dauphin, Halifax and Pine Grove.

It's been seven years since North Schuylkill has won a wrestling tournament team title.

It's been even longer at Williams Valley, according to available records, which don't show the Vikings taking a team gold.

Well, both those things changed Friday, Dec. 28 as the Spartans took top honors at the Upper Dauphin Holiday Invitational and the Vikings enjoyed a perfect day to place first at the Jim Thorpe Christmas Duals.

Vikes deliver in clutch to win JT Duals

JIM THORPE - Twice duals came down to the final bout, and both times Williams Valley came through with the decisive victories.

The Vikings defeated Delaware County Christian 64-12, Wilson Area 40-36, Jim Thorpe 60-17, Whitehall 36-31 and in the final, Southern Lehigh 42-36.

In the Whitehall dual, the outcome rested on the shoulders of 285-pounder Tim Carl. He escaped with five seconds left in the second 30-second tiebreaker to pull out a 4-3 win that sent the team to the final.

Southern Lehigh built a 30-18 lead before 182-pounder Ronnie Daub scored a pin to cut the deficit to six. The bout was tied at 4 at the time of the fall. In the last match, Willy Girard's 56-second pin broke a 36-all tie and lifted the Vikings to the team title.

Girard, Matt Miller, Billy Schaeffer and J.R. Rummel each went 5-0 for Williams Valley. Alex Raho was 4-0, while Tyler Deiter and Noah Crisswell were 4-1.

Jim Thorpe placed sixth in the eight-team field with a 2-3 record.
