High school wrestlers advance to district bouts

Two earn top seeds for D-4 tourney

WILLIAMSPORT - Two Line Mountain wrestlers earned top seeds for the District 4 Class AA tournament that begins Friday, Feb. 22 at Williamsport High School.

Sophomore Cameron Newman at 106 pounds and senior Seth Lansberry at 138 sit atop their respective brackets and received byes into the quarterfinal round.

Lansberry (31-2) won his fourth straight title by pinning Mount Carmel's Blake Panko in 3:44 in the 138-pound final on February 16 at the D-4 Class AA Southern Sectional Tournament. Newman, meanwhile, won the 106-pound title by beating previously unbeaten Corey Stauffer of Midd-West in the final. Line Mountain advanced seven wrestlers.

3 Dauphin County wrestlers win sectional titles

DUNCANNON - Two Halifax wrestlers and one from Upper Dauphin won championships at the District 3 Class AA Section I Tournament.

The Wildcats' Robbie Moretz (152) and Joey Kaufman (220) cruised to titles, while Upper Dauphin's Coy Campbell won four straight bouts to earn the 106-pound crown.

In the finals, Campbell (23-11) turned back Biglerville's Brady Mentzer 10-4.

Moretz (34-0) stopped Boiling Springs' John Vaughn 6-2, and Kaufman (33-0) routed Boiling Springs' Calvin Barrick by technical fall, 17-2 in 4:24.

Pine Grove 25

PINE GROVE - Blue Mountain defeated Pine Grove 51-25 in a Schuykill League Div. I matchup on February 6.

Lucas Forbes, Zach Yackenchick and Tristen Coello had pins for the Eagles (15-7, 4-1 D-I). Ryan Guers, Ian Cagle and Mitch Myers added technical falls.

Ryan Heim and Eli Brill won by fall for the Cardinals (12-8, 2-3).

Col-Mon VT 27

TOWER CITY - J.R. Rummel (195), Willy Girard (106), Alex Raho (113), Brandon Bettinger (152) and Billy Schaeffer (138) each recorded falls for the Vikings in their Division II victory over the Rams.

Tyler Deiter (120) added a decision win for Williams Valley (14-7, 4-1 D-II).

Dakota Olsen (145), Troy Patterson (170) and Jordan Rainer (182) had falls for Col-Mon Vo-Tech (9-13, 3-3 D-II).

HALIFAX - Joey Kaufman (285), Shane Liddick (138) and Robbie Moretz (160) recorded falls, but the Blackhawks won the final two bouts to pull out a non-league victory over the Wildcats.
