MILLERSBURG - Golfers will soon be hitting the links to benefit a scholarship charity event. They'll also have an opportunity to come away with some cash of their own - $10,000 to be exact - for a hole-in-one.
The 15th Annual George T. Carvell Foundation, Inc., Golf Tournament kicks off Saturday, August 14. Tee-off time begins at 1 p.m. in a two-man scramble format at the Lykens Valley Golf Course, Route 25, just north of Millersburg.
The George T. Carvell Foundation, Inc., was formed in honor of the late George T. Carvell by his grandson, John McCready, of Williamstown. Carvell had worked for the Millersburg Water Company from 1923 until his retirement in 1976.
The foundation awards an annual $500 scholarship to a graduate from either the Halifax, Millersburg, Upper Dauphin Area, or Williams Valley school districts. Students must be entering college to study in an environmental field to be eligible for the award.
The foundation operates through donations; the primary fund raiser is its annual golf tourney.
Cost to play in the tournament is $50 per person, which includes the entry fee, cart, 18 holes, a "skins" game, food and drinks. A $10,000 cash hole-in-one prize is also up for grabs, sponsored by Service Supply Corp. Other cash prizes available will be: $60, 1st place; $40, 2nd; $30, 3rd; $20, 4th; and $20 for closest to the pin (all par 3s) and $20 for the longest drive.
Interested golfers need to pre-register for this charity event by Aug. 7 by calling McCready at 717-215-3171, or by emailing him at johnmccready@comcast.net.
