Richard M. Major, 64, of Barry Township, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 evening at home.
Born in Pottsville, July 14, 1949, he was a son of the late James and Anna Hughes Major.
Rick was a graduate of North Schuylkill School High School, later graduating from Williamsport Area Community College with a degree in welding.
He was a veteran of the Navy, serving two tours in Vietnam with the Seabees, training the Vietnamese in bridge construction and welding skills. He was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Medal.
Following his military service, he was employed with Phoenix Contracting Co. as a heavy equipment operator, and most recently Auburn Golf Car Co., Pine Grove, until his retirement.
He was the current commander in office of VFW Post 7654, Ashland, and also a life member of the National Rifle Association. Rick was of the Methodist faith and he cherished his time at the pond, known to friends and family as the "L.P.O.E."
He was preceded in death by brothers, David, on Oct. 29, 2012, and James, on May 28, 2013.
He is survived by two sisters, Jennet Deeter, Hegins, and Ruthann, wife of Robert Schaeffer, Pine Grove; a sister-in-law, Betty Ann Major, Gordon; his best friend, Charles Blewis, Ashland; and 14 nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial funeral service Thursday, Jan. 16 at Ashland VFW Post 7654, 538 Centre St., Ashland. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. with military honors conducted at 7 p.m. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ashland VFW Post 7654, 538 Centre St., Ashland PA 17921. Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, Ashland, is in charge of arrangements.
