Phillip A. "Jeff" Schaeffer, 87, of Swatara Village, Pine Grove, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013 in Seton Manor.
Born in Summit Station, Nov. 13, 1925, he was a son of the late Philip J. and Rhea C. Trumbore Schaeffer.
He worked as a truck driver for PIE Nationwide Trucking Co.
Phillip was a World War II Army veteran having served with Company I 422nd Regiment 106th Division in Europe as an auto rifleman. During the Battle of the Bulge, he was taken prisoner by the Germans and held as a German Prisoner of War for 105 days. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, American Theater Service Medal, European Campaign Medal with three bronze stars, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal.
He was a member of St. Mark's (Brown's) Church, Schuylkill Haven; Pine Grove VFW Post 3432, Pine Grove American Legion Post 374, Tulpehocken Rifle and Pistol Club and the NRA.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mildred E. Moyer Schaeffer, on Dec. 21, 2012; and two sisters, Gloria Reinoehl, in 2002, and Betty Haldeman, in 2007.
Surviving are a brother, Guy "Jack" Schaeffer; two sisters, Shirley, wife of Ray "Abie" Krammes, and Gladys, wife of Bobby Donofrio, all of the Pine Grove area; nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday, Aug. 24 at H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, with the Rev. Eugene Eckroth officiating. Interment followed in St. Mark's (Brown's) Cemetery, Summer Hill Road, Schuylkill Haven. The family would prefer, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in his memory to St. Mark's (Brown's) Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, 151 Summer Hill Road, P.O. Box 37, Schuylkill Haven, PA, 17972.
