June "Isabel" Spokus, 93, of Valley View Retirement Community, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Joseph Spokus, in 1986.
Born in Valley View, June 29, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Elvin and Jennie Vada Miller Conrad.
She graduated from Hegins Township High School.
She was a registered nurse and enlisted in August 1943 in the Navy during World War II and spent much of her service time working in Hawaii, where she became a lieutenant in the Navy. Later in life, she worked at Nazareth Hospital, Philadelphia.
Isabel spent most of her life in Philadelphia actively involved in her church. She was known for her baking, sewing and quilting skills. Later in life she moved to Avalon, N.J., where she was an active member of the Stone Harbor Wetlands Quilting Club, having customized many beautiful quilts which were displayed at the Wetlands Institute.
Prior to her illness, Isabel was an active member of the Lou Gehrig's Association.
Despite her long life, Isabel's greatest attribute was her loving devotion to her family.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Dr. Joseph Conrad, Hegins, Dr. Chester Conrad, Los Angeles, Calif., Charles Conrad, Miriam Kukahiko, and Bill Conrad, all of Valley View, and Helen Forney, Sacramento.
Surviving are two sons, Conrad Michael Spokus and wife, Diane, Lewistown, and Ronald Joseph Spokus and wife, Gail, Bensalem; four granddaughters, Jennifer Youngblood and husband, Jason, Lutherville, Md., Kelly Curl and husband, Ryan, Fort Collins, Colo., Emilee Marie Spokus, State College, and Cara Pasquale and husband, Rocco, Philadelphia; two grandsons, David Michael Spokus and wife, Suzanne, Gettysburg, and Joseph Spokus and wife, Nicole, Philadelphia; four great-granddaughters, Isabella Joy Youngblood and Alexandra Genevieve Youngblood, both of Lutherville, Savanna Jade Curl, Fort Collins, Colo., and McKenna Marie Spokus, Gettysburg; a great-grandson, Desmond, Philadelphia.
A private military memorial service will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, at the convenience of the family. Barr Funeral Home Inc., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.
