Harlan L. "Pap" Schreffler, 100, of Rebuck, died on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Born in Leck Kill on June 25th, 1911, he was the son of the late Charles and Neila (Paul) Schreffler. His mother passed away from influenza prior to Christmas 1918. Several years later, he resided with his aunt, Ellen Hornberger. He attended the former Pine Park School in Leck Kill. On New Year's Day, 1934, he married the late Hilda (Rothermel) Schreffler. Following the death of his wife in 1979, he continued to live independently on his Rebuck farm until the winter of 2008.

He was of Lutheran faith, and was a member of Himmel's Church, Rebuck.

Besides his parents, wife and aunt Ellie, he was predeceased by two sisters and their spouses; Mildred and Lyle Schreffler and Lula and Lee Reiner; one half-brother, Ray Schreffler, a maternal aunt, Laura Long; and a son-in-law, Carl Crossley.

Although farming was his favorite vocation, he held many other jobs throughout his younger years. He helped wire the first electrical utility lines that came through the lower Northumberland County area. He also worked for the state highway system, hand digging ditches and laying the stone, which became the groundwork for the first macadam roads in the Red Cross area.

He is survived by two daughters; Shirley Crossley, wife of the late Carl Crossley, Bloomsburg, and Leah Unger, wife of Rodney Unger, Leck Kill; the following grandchildren and their spouses; Elwood Crossley and his wife Lori, Grand Junction, Colorado; Darby (Unger) wife of Thomas McDonnell, Bloomsburg; Eugene Crossley, Bloomsburg; Elaine (Crossley), wife of Merrill Dickinson, Albany, Georgia; Charles Unger and his wife Diane of Overlook.

Also surviving him are several great grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson, Brock and Jill Crossley, of Casper Wyoming; Lindsey and Matthew Dickinson, of Albany, Georgia; Adam and Amanda Unger of Overlook; Step-great grandchildren; Danny Walsh; Kassie Smith, Grand Junction, Colorado; Melissa Smith, Casper, Wyoming; Great-great grandson, Calyn Crossley, Casper, Wyoming.

A service to celebrate Pap's life was held from the Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home 1133, Ridge Rd., Klingerstown, on Saturday, Jan. 7. The Reverend Daniel Durkee, Senior Pastor of Emmanuel Wesleyan Church, Gratz, officiated. Interment followed in Himmel's Cemetery, Rebuck.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Upper Dauphin Human Services Center, P.O. Box 157, Elizabethville, PA 17023.
