George C. Meyer, 98, a former Ashland resident, died Monday, July 14, 2014 at Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center due to complications from pneumonia.

Born in Ashland, April 30, 1916, he was a son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Owens Meyer.

George attended St. Mauritius Elementary School and graduated from Ashland High School, Class of 1935.

He was a World War II veteran with the 25th Infantry Army Division stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He was there the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. A private first class cannoneer, he also served in Guadalcanal, Northern France and Rhineland.

He married his wife, Matilda "Tilly" Czajkowski, Feb. 2, 1952, in Philadelphia.

George was a life member of the VFW Post 7654, Ashland.

He retired in 1979 as a die setter and metal worker from Elco Corp., Willow Grove.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Tilly, Jan. 23, 1973; sister, Elizabeth "Betty" McDonald; and brothers, Francis and Aloysius "Wish" Meyer.

Surviving are sons, Joseph Meyer, husband of Jane, Lebanon, and John Meyer, husband of Vicki, Hatfield; a daughter, Dorothy, wife of Daniel Bozzuto III, Glendora, N.J.; grandchildren, Jessica and Jennifer Meyer, Daniel IV and Nicole Bozzuto and Alicia and Jared Meyer; nieces, Theresa "Dot" Kessler, Locustdale, and Betty Taylor, Orwigsburg; and nephews, John Meyer, Danville, and Wayne Meyer, Magnolia, N.J.

Mass of Christian burial was held Thursday, July 17, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 1115 Walnut St., Ashland. The celebrant was Monsignor William Glosser. Interment with military honors was held Friday, July 18 at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon. In lieu of flowers, Mass cards and donations can be made to St. Joseph Church, 1115 Walnut St., Ashland, PA 17921. Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, Ashland, was in charge of arrangements.
