HEGINS - The Hegins Fire Company officers and membership held their monthly meeting last Wednesday in the fire company social hall.

Fire Company President James Koons said a request was made to Timothy Koppenhaver to attend the meeting to discuss the actions that took place earlier this month which led to the suspension of Koppenhaver as a fire policeman.

According to Koons, Koppenhaver was suspended for 30-days for using expletive language to Koons during a meeting held after an incident Sunday, Feb. 3 in the Hegins Fire Company truck room. Koons said Koppenhaver was requested to attend the meeting Wednesday evening but was unable to due to a previously scheduled engagement.

"I was unable to attend the meeting because I'm a member of the Hegins-Valley View Rotary Club and my niece is student of the month for February and I didn't want to miss that honor for her."

Koppenhaver said he was not called or asked to come to talk to the officers or membership since being requested to attend the Wednesday meeting. At this point Koppenhaver said he is still on suspension.

"We are not going to make any further comments on this matter concerning the problem with the Hegins Fire Police," said Brandon Bressler, treasurer of the Hegins Fire Company. "We need to do an investigation between both parties to determine what went on."

In other fire company business, plans are being made for the annual Hegins Firemen's Carnival set for June 19-22 at the Hegins Park. The entertainment schedule is being ironed out and the ride company has been booked. The firework display by Bixler Pyrotechnics will be held Saturday, June 22. A family night is being planned for Thursday evening of the carnival.

"We are seeking support from the community again this year," said Bressler. "We need members of the community to come out and help operate the stands at the carnival. Anyone who can lend a hand should contact any member of the fire company or plan to attend a monthly meeting which are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Hegins Fire Company Social Hall."

The Hegins Fire Company truck room may become a little more secure in the near future. A vote was taken and passed to purchase a key swipe card system for the truck room. The system that is being purchased will be installed and come with 25 key cards. The cost of the system is between $1,100 and $1,300.

A motion was made and passed to increase the price per person for banquets held at the fire company. Those persons or organizations who were already scheduled for 2013 will have their price the same. The price will increase $1, making the cost per person $16.
